Structural steel is the most common structural support used in ordinary buildings. When you see a non-residential building, it is actually made of structural steel beams all around. Structural steel includes H-beams, I-beams, channels, and angles.
The shape of the steel beam makes the I-beam ideal for bending in one direction parallel to the web. In addition, the horizontal flange resists bending moments, while the web resists shear stresses.
