ASTM A131 and AH36 are structural grade steel plates, also known as marine grade steel plates. These two grades of steel plates are used almost exclusively in shipbuilding and offshore industries. This grade of steel plate is defined as high strength steel plate, with a minimum yield strength of 51 KSI. These products are available in various tempers: AH36 is in the as-rolled condition, DH36 is in the as-rolled and normalized condition, and EH36 is in the normalized condition. These grades are also certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
ASTM A992 (A572 Grade 50) steel is the most widely used building structural steel today. A992 building structural steel is used to make I-beams, H-beams,wide flanges, channels, plates, angles, and other shapes. ASTM A992 structural steel contains small amounts of vanadium or niobium, copper, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum to improve the clarity of the material.
In most cases, ASTM A992 steel is dual certified as A572 Grade 50, offering the high strength of A572
Carbon steel and a higher weight-to-strength ratio. Because A992 is easily weldable, it is often used to fabricate structural steel components that require high corrosion resistance.
