It’s a rather contradictory term for a steel material, rust-resistant steel is characterized by decay
Steel Plate.
COR-TEN, Corten, corten steel, and pre-weathered steel are often used to refer to the rust-colored steel used today in everything from bridge structural members to world-class buildings. But there are important differences between these materials.
COR-TEN: The Origin of Weathering Steel
Weathering steel was first developed by a U.S. steel company in the 1930s. The company was looking for a steel alloy for use in ore transport hopper cars that transfer iron ore and coal to furnaces. It needed a stronger, more durable steel alloy that had excellent hardness and did not need to be painted. It was not until much later that the staff discovered that this alloy had very good corrosion resistance and could be used in many industries. They then registered the COR-TEN® trademark for this corrosion-resistant steel alloy. COR stands for corrosion resistance and TEN stands for tensile strength. (Today, although the terms Corten and COR-TEN are used interchangeably, COR-TEN® is a registered product of U.S. Steel.)
However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that Corten steel was used as a building material. In 1964, the John Deere headquarters in Moline, Illinois, opened as a weathering steel building, one of the first major structures to be clad in corten steel.
The copper content of weathering steel forms a unique oxidation barrier on the surface of the steel. This weathering barrier grows from the surface outward and inward. Unlike ordinary rust, the oxide formed on weathering steel is a thick and impermeable ferrous oxide, which makes the steel metal have a wide range of corrosion resistance.
Henan Houming uses Cor-Ten to manufacture steel components for outdoor applications where long life and aesthetics are required. Our company offers a comprehensive service including laser cutting and secondary processing to achieve full production of all project specifications.
We are able to cut thick steel plates up to 25.0mm thick Cor-Ten steel. The factory's machinery has a wide range of processing equipment, allowing us to undertake projects large and small.
