What is the silicon content of oriented electrical steel? Oriented electrical steel typically has a silicon content of 3% (Si:11Fe). Due to the need to strictly control the crystal orientation relative to the plate (developed by Norman P. Goss), the best properties of oriented silicon steel are in the rolling direction. The magnetic flux density in the rolling direction of the coil is increased by 30%, but its magnetic saturation is reduced by 5%. Cold rolled oriented steel is used for the core of power and distribution transformers and is often referred to as CRGO.

CRGO is usually supplied in coil form from our cold rolled coil mills. Oriented grain steel must be cut into “stacks” and then used to form the transformer core, an integral part of any transformer.
