Electrical steel (E-steel, laminated steel, silicon electrical steel, silicon steel, relay steel, transformer steel) is a special Steel Coil. Silicon steel coils are mainly used in the cores of electromagnetic devices such as motors, generators and transformers because it (electrical steel) reduces power losses. It is an iron alloy with silicon (rather than carbon) as the main added element. The precise formula is tailored to produce specific magnetic properties: small hysteresis area resulting in low power loss per cycle, low core losses, and high magnetic permeability.

Electrical steel (silicon steel) is usually manufactured from cold rolled strip with a thickness of less than 2 mm. These Cold Rolled Steel plate are cut into the required shapes and made into laminations, which are stacked together to form the laminated core of transformers and the stators and rotors of electric motors. The laminations can be cut into the finished shape with punches and dies, or in smaller quantities, they can be machined with laser or wire-cut EDM.
