Architecture uses corten steel to cover pyramid-shaped house in Montana

Located in a remote area of central Montana, the Four Roof House  was designed for a couple who wanted a low-maintenance home where they could age in place.

The site the couple chose to build on, a bluff overlooking a lake near the town of Helmville, presented various challenges, such as changeable weather conditions and the threat of wildfires.

 "The region's microclimate is known for its harsh variability, including 30-degree temperature swings, wildfires, and high snowfall, revived by wildflowers and abundant wildlife during the summer months," said the Northern California-based construction team, TW Ryan Architecture. A key goal for the design team was to create a weathering steel home that would be strong and durable, and that would "withstand changing weather conditions while enhancing a refined engagement with the unique site's natural landscape."

The architectural team envisioned a 5,000-square-foot (465-square-meter) residential proposal that prioritizes solar orientation and views. One side of the home is set at an angle, adding dynamism to the floor plan. Large roof overhangs help protect the home from direct sunlight during warmer months while still allowing sunlight to penetrate during the winter. The entire building's walls and roof are clad in standing-seam weathering steel with a natural patina.

Over time, the steel cladding will provide visual continuity to the copper-rich rock outcroppings on site. It also helps protect against wildfires.

“Corten steel not only records the changing seasons with its own naturally occurring patina, but also provides a protective shell for wildfires that are frequently sparked by lightning strikes in the area,” the team said.

Inside the corten-clad residence, one will find brightly lit rooms with earthy finishes like oak and stone. A radiant system provides heat, and fresh air flows in through operable windows.

“Every habitable room in this corten-clad home is naturally ventilated, and all major public spaces have at least three operable windows to facilitate crosswinds,” the team said.

At the heart of the corten house is the public area, which features an open kitchen, dining area, and living room. Glass walls and sliding doors provide a seamless transition to the outdoor deck.

“As the client selected the site’s location for the beauty of the home’s natural surroundings, maintaining and supporting that environment became a driving factor in the design,” the team said.
